Roger Patterson Film
Do you think the Roger Patterson film is authentic film evidence of a Bigfoot, also known as a Sasquatch? The Roger Patterson film can be a very tricky subject to discuss; it invokes deep feelings within Bigfoot believers and nonbelievers alike! The Patterson film from 1967 has still never been proven to be faked and may never will. Attempted recreations using modern techniques have been just horrible. It is still considered the best proof of the creature’s authenticity to date.
The Patterson-Gimlin film or simply the Patterson film is a short motion picture of an unidentified subject walking across a clearing filmed on October 20, 1967 by Roger Patterson and Robert Gimlin who claimed the motion picture was a genuine recording of a living breathing female Bigfoot. The infamous grainy footage has been subjected to countless attempts to both debunk and authenticate it. Patterson chose the area due to intermittent reports of the creatures in the past and of their enormous footprints near there since 1958.
A number of qualified scientists after inspection have judged the motion picture a hoax with a man in an ape suit, but other scientists have contended the movie depicts an animal unknown to science, or cryptid, claiming it would be virtually impossible for a human to replicate the subject’s ape suit, gait and muscle movements. Patterson initially estimated the creature’s/Patty’s height (Patty is the name given to the alleged Bigfoot in the film by Patterson believers) at six and one-half to seven feet, and later raised his estimate to about seven and one-half feet.
Roger Patterson’s friend and business associate, Robert Gimlin, has always denied being involved in any part of a possible hoax with Patterson and claims that he and his partner had encountered a genuine Bigfoot. Patterson said he became fascinated in Bigfoot after reading an article about the creature by Ivan Sanderson in True magazine in December 1959. Roger Patterson died of Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1972, still swearing to the authenticity of his Bigfoot film.

I think it might both be true: Robert Gimlin thinking it was real, but in fact being a hoax. What if a friend of Gimlin was joking around or wanted to help him? Knowing, in which areas Gimlin would would look for Bigfoot he might have disguised in a funny dress and gave Gimlin some (big) footage…
Jerry yes that’s a possibility, but a lot of people will argue the point that it was impossible to make such a realistic ape suit in the 1960′s.
Its one of the biggest signs of proof for the Roger Patterson film bigfoot believers, they will claim we did not have the technology and the know how back then, to create such a vivid, lifelike monkey suit.
of course the roger patterson film depicts about bigfoot which we are totally unaware about,no one can tell whether they exist until they are shown with concrete evidence,as far as i am concerned i don’t believe bigfoot exists.
i totally agree that big foot exixts , the proof i believe on is the foot marks and the skin .
Roger patterson’s film is also a big proof.
im not sure if the north american bigfoot still exists, but it did exist in 1967 when patterson filmed one. freeman footage is a hoax, snowwalker footage is a hoax, and all other films i have seen are hoaxes, pattersons is 100% real. the fact is roger patterson is a legend, the only one to capture a real film clip of bigfoot. bob gimlin is also a good man who would not lie for over 42 years.
I think that bigfoot does exist but the fake stuff that other people do… makes it a theory and cahnges other peoples mind about it and not believe in it as much as they used too…. so yea i think that the proof that Roger Patterson has is 100% true …ROCK ON MAN….?
What an interesting possibility! How could I possibly be sure one way of the other regarding the existence of such a creature? It intrigues me enough that I would spend months tracking and searching for evidence if I had such an opportunity.
I wonder, if mountain cats, bear and other critters can be tracked and caught with the use of hounds, what are the reasons that the same sort of effort has not worked yet with this primate?
I commend you for the work and layout you manage in this matter. Quite professionally done with what certainly seems to be a fair and balanced approach. Best regards. Robert.
Thank you Robert for the compliment on the site. I am trying to provide a fair and balanced site for both the Bigfoot believers and non.
Robert, hunting dogs have been used in the search for Bigfoot, but so far none have been caught. But there are claims of hunting dogs tracking Bigfoot’s scent.
yes i might be true but i want real big foot caught on tape either images
it simply seems more probable that this footage is authentic, than that two northwest rednecks (no insult intended) managed, intentionally or accidentally, to create a film that still manages to foster such fierce debate. Nothing even close has been produced despite 40 years of attempts, at far greater expense than Gimlin and Patterson had access to.
I never believe in what I have never seen, I think this film is man-made
I think that if the Patterson figure is just a suit, then the designer would have made the costume male, leaving off the breasts. It seems it would have been easier to make. Just my idea.
I have several thoughts on some of the questions and comments that have been made on this section. As to the debate about the patterson Film, Major factor in the creditability argument of it’s authenticity, is the fact that certain muscle groups can be seen and identified, moving under the hair, a suit will not do that. Only recently (Past twenty years or so at best) have we had the technology to produce foam and latex inserts that replicate body or muscle shape & mass, certainly *NOTHING* like that was available in Patterson’s day. Plus those working in Hollywood ( i.e – John Chambers who did the costume work for The Plante of the Apes) at the time have admitted no such technology was even close, to being available to produce such a quality as the Bigfoot in patterson’s Film. Now as far as how could this animal be so elusive that we cannot catch it. First, from what we can gather, and to the best of our knowledge, it’s probably a primate descended from the extinct Gigantopithecus from southern aisa, that migrated when crossing a land bridge into what is now North America. that would mean it is like other primates..intelligent, and therefore can think, plan, and hide…Obviously very well. Bones or dead bodies of these animals, not being found has never been an issue with me, for several reason. First, I live in an area where black bear is common, and in almost 40 years, I have never seen a dead bear or it’s carcus ever! Now consider that the population of black bears in my area By a DNR report is around 5,100 this year, and the population of the Sasquatch or Bigfoot is thought to be in the range of around 2000 in the whole USA, Now consider those FACTS and see what you think, not to mention many believe they bury their dead, or like other knwon animals when sick they hide in dense brush for saftey, which would hide bones, and not to mention the quick decomposition and scattering, due to North America’s climate, and scavengers. Sorry for the long post, but I had a lot on my mind, that I thought needed to be said, opthers may disagree -LOL Thansk for your hard work, keep it up friend.
Opinions should not matter either way. The truth is in the details. If it was a man in a suit the track would show it. The creature left tracks that were deeper than Patterson’s horse, with him on top of it. Considering that the prints covered more than twice the sq. inches of the hoof print and was deeper, physics would prove the creature weighed approximately 700 to 800 lbs. (& possibly more). Actual calculations using the exact positioning of the camera showed the creature to be 7′ 5″ tall. Now put yourself, or anyone you know, into that suit and walk with that size and weight up the creek bank, almost 200 yards through the valley, over sand, limbs, and rocks, and then turn and go up an embankment over 70′ high and a 40 degree grade (as trackers later showed the creature did), and do it with grace and without any obvious stress, and you would be able to make the film, if you had the perfect suit. Some of you may know that John Green has a $250,000 (and possibly more) reward for anyone that can do it and nobody has even wanted to try. The only one that claimed to be able to do it was Bob H. and he could not even make 3 comparable strides without the suit or the weight before falling. Another part of the argument is that the vast majority of Bigfoot witnesses are not people who have anything to gain. They include Park Officers, Patolmen, Police officers, lawyers, doctors, and even little old ladies seeing them in their own backyards, and never wanting to see them again. Many times sightings have been witnessed by more than one person or groups not even knowing each other, and turning duplicate reports. Unfortunately the vast majority of the doubters have spent virtually no time researching the reports or in the woods themselves.
If you are sure the film was a hoax, go get the reward.
Hey Andrew,
Your kind of logic is what gets bigfoot believers in trouble. Remember the bigfoot hoax that was all over the news a few years ago? Guess what? One of the guys involved in the hoax was a policeman.
http://edition.cnn.com/2008/US/08/21/bigfoot.hoax/index.html
Being a policeman, or a doctor, or a little old lady doesn’t mean you aren’t human. They’re just as human as any other, and are subject to the same human flaws that affect the rest of us. There are plenty of cops who steal, plenty of doctors who use drugs, and plenty of little old ladies who lie.
Might as well believe Dumbo was real. Bigfoot is big hoax made just to make money.
