The name ‘Bigfoot’ is relatively new. This name began in 1957. At this time there were some large footprints that were discovered near a construction site in the Pacific Northwest region of the US. These footprints appeared to have been made by a large creature with definite human-like characteristics.
Plaster casts of the footprints were quickly made and the story of ‘Bigfoot’ was launched.

Although many people were hearing about this creature for the very first time, the legends about ‘Bigfoot’ were much older. Native Americans had known of the existence of the ‘Sasquatch’ for many generations. Other names for this creature include ‘Hairy Man’, ‘Man-Beast’ and ‘Forest Dweller’.
During the early 1900s tales were circulated about an ‘ape like’ creature who threw rocks and sticks at a cabin. There were also stories of people who claimed to have been kidnapped by these ‘ape-men’. In the mid 1940s there were a number of people who claimed to have seen a strange and bizarre creature that appeared to be part bear. The story of a bizarre acting Grizzly in the Northwest US created ‘attention-getting’ headlines in many papers.
1957 was a special year for these shadowy, humanoid creatures. Not only were those large footprints causing excitement in the US, there was a massive search underway in Tibet for Bigfoot’s cousin, “The Abominable Snowman“.
The first filmed sighting of a Bigfoot creature occurred in California in 1967. Two men, Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin, were able to use their camera to capture the image of some large creature walking across a shallow creek. This was before digital camera technology and the film quality is rather poor, but the image of this possible Bigfoot was enough to shock the world.
Many people of Native American ancestry believe these creatures are sacred forest beings. They also consider them to be ‘helpers’ who are trying to do good deeds for mankind.
Some people have asserted that Bigfoot is a space traveler who is now here on Earth to help guide humans. Many Native Americans believe that these creatures exist in another dimension and can appear or disappear from our view whenever they wish.
Bigfoot is said to possess both human and animal traits. The strength and power of these creatures is said to be much greater than any other being on Earth.
People who claim to have seen Bigfoot report that this creature has a very distinctive body odor. Most describe the odor as ‘skunk-like’. This stench is so intense and unpleasant that it acts as an ‘early warning’ to tell people that a Bigfoot is either approaching or has recently departed from a present location.
There are no reports of any Bigfoot killing or deliberately harming a human. Instead it seems as though these creatures are amazingly shy and try to avoid most contact with the human species.
There are a number of stories and reports about people being helped by a Bigfoot creature. In many ways it appears that Bigfoot is actually a gentle giant that lives among the shadows and protective covering of caves, mountains and forests.
No new sightings of Bigfoot have been reported in the last 10 years. However there are a number of people searching for these secretive creatures and it is certain that new tales of Bigfoot will once again be surfacing.
